On our way from Cape Town to Stanford we stopped in at Betty's Bay which was the site of an old oiling station. We visited Stony Point Penguin Colony to view the black-footed penguins, cormorants, and fascinating little creatures called hyraxes who are also known locally as dassies.
On our way home, we stayed overnight with friends who live right at the edge of Great Slave Lake. The beach in front of their home is beautiful. The kids had a blast making their own pool by making a driftwood log frame at beach level which they then covered with muddy sand they bucketed from the lake. Once the pool was dug to their satisfaction they brought water up from the lake to fill the pool!
I do sometimes link to resources that I and my family personally use and recommend. I participate in Amazon's associates program and if you enter Amazon.ca through my blog and then make a purchase, I will receive a small percentage of the sale. I link to Amazon more for the sake of making it easy for people to find certain book titles, however, if you have a local bookshop that has a good selection please support independent booksellers. I often shop on eBay and online secondhand book shops as we don't have a book shop of any size nearby.
